Coronavirus, the car rules

Men in a car

For Phase 2 of the health emergency, the Institute of Health has drawn up a small handbook
to use to move around safely behind the wheel of your car or in a shared car.
Starting with personal protective equipment: the use of masks is not necessary if you are
travelling alone, but it becomes necessary if you are together with people who do not live in
the same house. If you are travelling together with others, the advice is also to keep the
window open. As far as the distance to be kept inside the passenger compartment is
concerned, if you are travelling with people who do not live in the same house, you must travel
at a safe distance. A maximum of two people and the passenger must sit in the back seat (as
in the photo, from the website After driving or being inside a car, you must
always wash your hands and do not touch your eyes, nose and mouth.

Sanitization chapter: The Institute of Health’s experts recommend cleaning the interior
surfaces of the car with a microfibre cloth and alcohol-based preparations. The use of bleach
and ammonia is not recommended because the sodium hypochlorite present in these products
could have an abrasive action on leather and plastic. Use the vacuum cleaner on the
upholstery, or if you choose to wash it, do it with the appropriate cleaning products, paying
particular attention to the car floor mats, which if worn, should be replaced. For those who
move by car sharing, if you have a microfibre cloth and an alcohol-based preparation, experts
suggest cleaning all surfaces that may have been touched by other people: steering wheel,
gear lever, handbrake, air vents, seat belts, direction indicators, switches for windscreen
wipers and lights, interior rear-view mirror, lever to adjust the exterior rear-view mirror,
keys, handles. For operations requiring gloves, take care not to touch your eyes, nose and
mouth, and take the gloves off and inside out and dispose of them in the undifferentiated
waste. Please avoid leaving them lying around.

The use of air conditioning: Experts suggest to periodically check the filters of the air
conditioning systems and for a deep cleaning, also remove the air filter and sanitize the vents
and pipes making the air for circulation. Info and details on
Winter tyre change, extended deadline: It is possible to fit summer tyres until 15 June,
thanks to the extension granted to tyre dealers and motorists by the Ministry of Transport,
for the seasonal change of tyres. A decision which was taken in consideration of the social
distancing. Summer tyres can therefore be fitted instead of winter tyres with a later date.
By law, the period covered by the winter tyre requirement is between 15 November and 15
April. However, not all drivers will have to change their tyres. There are two exceptions:
vehicles with four-season tyres and tyres with a speed index equal to or higher than the one
indicated on the registration certificate (they can circulate all year round). However, any
drivers obliged to change tyres and do not comply with the change, can risk penalties ranging
from 422 euros to a maximum of 1,695 euros.

A new approach to the future is needed -Multidisciplinary and multimodality. These are
the key words to re-design mobility after lockdown according to traffic and transport
engineers. According to Aiit, Associazione Italiana Ingegneria del Traffico e dei Trasporti
the Covid 19 emergency "will completely and definitively change mobility in its public and
private transport components. It forsees an immediate and significant reduction in the supply
of public services for collective transport, especially at local and regional level. And, despite
the use of technologies (ability to work remotely, the suspension of school activities, the
contraction in demand for mobility as a result of greater distance in social activities), the
residual demand for mobility will be greater than the reduced supply". With the result of a
potential deviation towards greater use of private means. Hence, according to Ait, the need
to rethink the mobility of the future with a new approach that points to 4 fundamental

  • organize time and space in cities by focusing on the role of corporate and area mobility managers who can make qualitative and quantitative analysis of mobility demand in the short and long term;
  • verify the sustainability of the mobility structure in all its components;
  • deepening the aspects of financial and economic sustainability for collective passenger transport services;
  • implement new technologies able to integrate the different transport services.
