New Green Zone, Councilor Patanè: "We want to amend the resolution."

Translated by V. Zelada.

Municipality aware of the difficulties of many citizens

The Capitoline Councillor for Mobility, Eugenio Patanè, speaking in the extraordinary session of the Municipal Council XV, on the the municipal measure relating to the new Limited Green Zone –  released: "We agree to modify the resolution and we have sent a letter to the Lazio Region to set up a technical table". "Let's try to build together a measure that holds together Rome’s fate and social needs," added Patanè, "It's not that the Municipality doesn't see that there is a social difficulty of many citizens who need to change their cars, but simply they can't do it. I will go to all the extraordinary municipal councils on the issue."

It should be remembered that in the Green Zone The stop for Euro 0 and 1 cars and for Diesel also for Euro 2 has been active for years. Since last November, Euro 2 gasoline/petrol cars, Euro 3 diesels cars, and Euro 0 and 1 motorcycles and mopeds have been added, all categories of vehicles in any case already prohibited in the smaller Railway Ring.

The new rules, which will be accompanied by surveillance cameras, currently provide for the prohibition of access to the Green Zone to be gradually extended to other types of vehicles: Euro 4 diesels from next November and Euro 3 gasoline cars from November 2024. The rules, are contained in the Lazio’S Region air quality plan to reduce excessive polluting emissions also in the Rome area.

The measures to limit the circulation of certain categories of vehicles, explains the Capitoline Councillor for Mobility, "have been adopted to put an end to the fines imposed by Europe on Italy, coming back from the exceedances of pm10 and nitrogen dioxide which occurred and are also occurring in Rome and in the Valle del Sacco. From the first insights made the boilers do not affect: because 95 percent are methane-fired. While 59 percent of nitrogen dioxide production comes from private transport. The measures contained in the region's air quality plan make us lower our overruns by 11 percent, thus falling within the nitrogen dioxide and pm10 limits."

"We have written to the regional governor Francesco Rocca to sit down at a table, in compliance with all regulations," added Patanè, "to verify which exemptions to implement to meet the citizens' needs. The changes will have to be accompanied by incentives that we hope will help people. The fundamental point is that there are many citizens in difficulty who cannot change their cars. This is where the real iniquity lies, that is between those who can and those who cannot change their car. Not between the center and the suburbs, because the largest share of vehicles that do not respect the limits is in the center of Rome."
