Ostiense Street-Basilica San Paolo Basilica-Piramide Station

The location of the bike route called 'Via Ostiense’ from the Basilica San Paolo to the Piramide Station' is one of the routes classified as a 'main corridor' by the Framework Cycle Plan. The construction of the cycle path guarantees a connection to the Metro B station 'San Paolo' and is close to the 'Garbatella' station; it links up with the existing cycle path of Ponte Settimia Spizzichino and, together with two other projects receiving funding under the NOP ('Metro San Paolo - Giustiniano Imperatore' and 'Viale del Campo Boario'), creates an important urban connection. Moreover, along the cycle route there are excellent facilities, starting from the university seats and continuing with places of worship and culture of great importance (e.g. Centrale Monte Martini); the commercial and tertiary ribbon that characterises the Via Ostiense axis contributes to making the realisation of the new cycle route strategic. The length of the journey is 2100 m. The road axis affected by the laying of the bike lane is: Via Ostiense (Basilica San Paolo) close to Via Giustiniano Imperatore (connection with the cycle path of the project PON Fermata Metro San Paolo - G. Imperatore - via C. Colombo) up to piazzale Ostiense (connection with the PON project bike lane: via del Campo Boario and piazzale Ostiense - via dei Cerchi). In the executive design phase, some general points were taken into account, based on objectives shared by all the entities involved in the intervention subject to this report, and the project was updated on the basis of these points. The main objectives of the intervention include; prevailing use of only horizontal signs for the construction of cycle routes, limiting complex and invasive interventions; implementation of cycle mobility offers and reconnection of the existing cycle infrastructure system; standardisation of new cycle routes with the existing cycle network; upgrading of existing public spaces by enhancing the services offered; securing existing pedestrian crossings; securing existing and planned routes in order to avoid confusion of paths and minimise the occurrence of dangerous situations; use of innovative and eco-sustainable materials and solutions; removal of architectural barriers.
