Electronic Gates

The LTZ (Limited Traffic Zone) is the essential tool for the protection policy of the Historic Center of Rome through a system of electronic gates monitoring and controlling traffic.

The subsystem uses 50 gates on the access roads to the LTZ that electronically detect the license plate number of the trespassing vehicle, activating the procedure of sanction foreseen by the regulations in force. Following the positive results obtained with the Historic City Center LTZ, a new Limited Traffic Zone was established (Trastevere) which became effective on July 2006 and which consists of 12 gates on all access roads that are solely optically controlled by the system.

Furthermore, measurement stations, which are also connected with the system, classify the vehicles entering the Trastevere LTZ.

An important novelty was the installation of variable message signs close to the electronic gates to nform users if the gate is active or not. An additional 10 electronic gates have been installed to protect the area of San Lorenzo, 10 more for the LTZ Testaccio and 21 passages that control access to the ZTL AF1 VAM.

Bus Lanes

To improve the public transport service, Roma Servizi per la Mobilità has introduced ITS technologies to detect and fine vehicles using reserved bus lanes without autorization

The first three devices were introduced in 2006 and activated in May 2007, using the same system used for the automatic control of access into traffic restricted areas. In February 2008, a new device was installed on Via dei Serpenti. The developing of the system has allowed to extend the detection to mopeds and motorbikes. The first control systems with cameras for bus lanes were installed in the Historic Centre, to monitor important public transport routes and later extended to other bus lanes in the city:

  • 2 on via Nazionale, near largo Magnanapoli and via Milano;
  • 1 on via dell’Amba Aradam, near via di Villa Fonseca;
  • 2 on via Ostiense, near the street number 131 and piazzale Ostiense;
  • 1 on circonvallazione Cornelia, near via Pagano;
  • 1 on via Aurelia, near via Cardinal Mistrangelo;
  • 2 on via Catania, near piazza Lecce (one for each direction);
  • 4 on via Nomentana, near via Sant'Angela Merici, viale XXI Aprile and via Sacco Pastore (here one for each direction);
  • 1 on via di Portonaccio;
  • 1 on via del Tritone, near via Zucchelli;
  • 1 on via S. Maria in Cosmedin, near via della Greca

Video surveillance

The system is composed of 74 CCTV cameras remotely controlled (swivelling and zooming), located near basilicals areas and critical crossroads.

Video signals and data are transmitted to the Mobility Control Centre through an optic fiber network, whose main ridges are installed in underground stations. The cameras are also located near some Metro stops (lines A and B: San Paolo, Circo Massimo, Colosseo, Cavour, Policlinico, Ottaviano, Flaminio, Vittorio Emanuele, San Giovanni, Re di Roma) and near critical intersections.

The system was installed in 1999 and activated in 2000, during the Jubilee.

Since then, the system has been extremely helpful for the Municipal Police. The system is active 24/7; it does not record images, it only monitors the traffic situation and road conditions.

29 new digital cameras were installed in 2013 (along Tangenziale Est, Muro Torto and Via Togliatti), and the 45 already existing cameras were digitalized.
