Rome is among 100 cities chosen by Europe to work on climate neutrality

Rome is one of 9 Italian cities (there are 100 at the European level) selected by the EU Commission to participate in the Climate-neutral & smart cities project. Goal, is to achieve climate neutrality by 2030. Just over seven years to achieve zero greenhouse gas emissions or at least reduce them, offsetting the remaining ones.

The other municipalities taking part in the initiative are Bergamo, Bologna, Florence, Milan, Padua, Parma, Prato and Turin. They will work with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Sustainable Mobility (Mims-with whom a memorandum of understanding has been signed) on projects and proposals to hit the mission's goals. "The experiences that the 9 municipalities selected by the European Commission will gain, can be useful for the whole country," says the Transport Minister Enrico Giovannini. Government-administration collaboration will also serve to attract private funds. "Being among these pathfinder cities was an important achievement for our capital city", commented the mayor, Roberto Gualtieri. Rome will be a great inclusive laboratory of the ecological transition. The pillars of our action, are those of sustainable mobility and the revitalization of public transport, the vision of the " 15 min city "based on proximity of services, the closure of the waste cycle, with the increase of differentiated waste and the construction of plants for recycling and energy recovery, urban forestation, and the energy efficiency of the building stock." Meanwhile, in recent days, the European Commission again reiterated Italy's shortcomings in terms of EU legislation, particularly on waste and smog.

However, according to a study by Enea, the national agency for new technologies, energy and sustainable economic development, our country is on track to meet its 2030 targets for reducing emissions of the main air pollutants, with benefits in terms of health (50 percent fewer deaths than in 2010) and economics (33 billion euros saved compared to 2010). Italy has planned investments of 300 billion in sustainability.
