Trastevere Station: project presented to open on one side of p.zzale della Radio

New pedestrian and bicycle accesses and a short stop area (Kiss&ride) on the piazzale della Radio side are just some of the new features planned by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, lead partner of the FS Group's Infrastructure Cluster, for Rome's Trastevere station.

The project was unveiled at a meeting, held at the Drugstore Museum, attended by the Capitoline councillors for Urban Planning and Mobility, Maurizio Veloccia and Eugenio Patanè, the presidents of City Hall XI and XII, and RFI Stations Engineering and Investment Directorate, Antonello Martino.

The project, notes FS, will be carried out in several phases and initially includes the construction of a pedestrian access from Via Portuense and a driveway and bicycle/pedestrian access from Via del Fornetto. A Kiss&Ride area (short parking zone) will be created, as well as stalls for people with reduced mobility that will allow them to reach the station platforms directly. Care of green spaces and increased traveller services are also planned.

According to studies and simulations carried out by RFI, this solution will increase the pool of users by 50 %; who will be able to walk to the station within 15 minutes, from 39000 potential users/day to over 51,000, further increasing pedestrian access to the station.

Work will begin by autumn 2023 and be completed around mid-2025 with an economic investment of about 8 million euros.

At the same time, the second step of the project is being developed with the urban rehabilitation of the entire route from Portuense to the station. This second phase includes the creation of a green and bicycle-pedestrian promenade, a linear green park, and the widening of Via Portuense and Via Pacinotti to Piazzale della Radio.

The Trastevere station, the note says, will thus become the hinge of the Gianicolense/Marconi quadrant, which is already undergoing an overall urban regeneration. At the same time, Roma Capitale is already working on the redevelopment of Piazza Flavio Biondo, the construction of the new Piazzale della Radio parking lot, which will bring more than 450 parking spaces and a complete redesign of the square, and the new Tiber Park in Marconi, which will see its full opening to the public in a few days with a new play and fitness area. Work on the modernization of Ponte di Ferro (the Iron Bridge) will also follow in the spring.
