The Capital's bicycle network stretches for about 320 km and winds through parks and historic villas (about 100km) and along the main streets of the city encouraging the use of active and sustainable mobility not only in leisure time but also in travel for work and study. Thanks to its interconnection with the public transport network, the cycle network connects many of the city's neighborhoods and makes it possible to reach numerous points of public interest, thus representing a viable alternative to car use.
Roman cyclists have numerous racks available to safely leave their bicycles in front of the office, school, university, subway station or at major interchanges: about 1,000 elements for a total of nearly 5,000 bike spaces.
To facilitate the exchange with public transport, bike boxes are being installed in 7 subway stations that represent the evolution of simple racks. A total of about 2,000 parking spaces are expected to be created at 40 stations.
Some bicycle routes are monitored by passage detection points or, more simply, bike counters, which record the passage of bicycles and scooters in both directions of the direction of travel; the set of data collected makes it possible to carry out evaluations and studies on the subject of city mobility.
Three types of bike counters are currently being tested in Rome: cameras, ground coils, and pneumatic tubes. When totems are connected to them, it is possible to see on the display not only the number of transits, but also the value in tons of CO2 emissions saved in relation to the passage of vehicles.

- Development of the bicycle network
Bicycling is now one of the cornerstones of the design of an increasingly sustainable city mobility system. Indeed, Roma Capitale has equipped itself with tools for planning and implementing infrastructure and mobility services that will offer in the short, medium and long term new opportunities for citizens and tourists to move around.
On the occasion of the December 16, 2022 "Rome starts pedaling again-Bike connects the city" conference, the main development assets of Rome's future bicycle network were presented (the conference speakers' papers).
Bike-friendly public transport: the rules
Among the actions taken by Roma Capitale to promote cycling from Phase 2 of the Covid-19 emergency, is the extension of the conditions for bicycle access (folding and traditional) on public transport, which will then be able to travel daily and without time limits on buses, trams, and metro
For Metrebus subscribers, bicycle transportation is free on the entire network otherwise a ticket must also be purchased for the bicycle. The transport of folding bikes always remains free, so even for non-Metrobus subscribers
For all other information regarding bicycle access and transportation check the Atac website.

Bicycles and electric micromobility: sharing grows in Rome
Even on the streets of Rome, electric bicycles and scooters, the new protagonists of mobility in many Italian and European cities, can be rented for journeys of all distances.
